In these strange times we are living in, it is time to take stock of where we are on our pathway.
Is it time to re-access the journey and use this time to look within at where we’re all headed and re-connect to Earth and her stabilizing presence.
Allow yourselves to deeply connect with Mother energy, the energy that goes beyond your physical body and find your root connection to all you are within.
Make a Beginning
To begin our journey into the Root/Base Chakra spend a couple of minutes with your eyes closed visualising or imagining a spinning ball of vibrant red energy pulsating at the base of your spine in the centre of your pelvis.
As you focus on that vibrant red energy feel it begin to grow and spread through your pelvis and hips then expanding further outwards to fill your legs, ankles, feet and toes; pulsating through your abdomen and rising up your spine to your shoulders.
Expanding further through your stomach, liver, pancreas, spleen, heart and lungs and the filling the whole of your core; this beautiful energy rises further and moves down your arms into your wrists, hands and fingers pulsating gently as it fills every cell and muscle, every tissue and bone.
Still this vibrant red energy rises further and fills your neck, head and face with beautiful red energy.
Spend a few moments feeling this grounding, mothering, nurturing energy filling you up completely until it overflows out of you filling your aura and surrounding you in a bubble of vibrant red energy.
Let yourself float within the bubble for a few minutes and experience the energy of the Root/Base Chakra. When you are finished take a few deep breaths and return to the room.
Going Even Deeper
Now that you are aware of what the energy of the Root/Base Chakra feels like you can begin to get to know that energy more clearly and find the healing and guiding qualities in that energy that will help you on your journey through life, for instance, this chakra governs issues around physical self-preservation, physical survival, security and safety, as well as primal erotic and procreational urges.
Some of the healing issues you may experience if your Root/Base Chakra is blocked will be a restriction of the flow of energy from Source (God, Goddess, The Universe, Buddha etc…) into you and vice versa are feelings of not being grounded, feeling like you can’t settle in one place, task or action, lack of trust in yourself (primarily) and others, a lack of nourishment both physically and emotionally, ill-health and general dis-ease, a general lack of boundaries in daily life.
Do you ever have a feeling that your self-preservation and permanence is threatened?
If so you are probably working with this chakra and you need to connect to the earth energies and empower yourself by taking earth walks in nature, doing some gardening, finding the joy in the autumn colours that surround us, physical exercise, dancing and movement, cooking with fresh ingredients and thanking them for their offerings… there are many ways to reconnect and they all involve a joy of being in the moment. .
The Root/Base Chakra is know in Sanskrit as Muladhara, which means roots or support system.
It is located at the perineum and the base of the spine and links us to the physical world, solidity and support, especially in the physical body and it is the foundation of our energies.
Our physical body often experiences Root/Base Chakra problems in the lower back, sciatic pain in the hips and legs, stiffness of joints, abdominal pains and IBS, amongst others… so there are re-connective stretching exercises that may help, Kundalini yoga awakens the energy at the base of the spine, spending time relaxing and loosening off control in your life can also have a beneficial effect on clearing the flow of this chakra.
If your Root/Base Chakra is healthy you will have a balance vision of life, generally be in good health, be vital and well grounded, feel comfortable in your body, you will have a deep sense of trust in the world and feelings of safety and security, an ability to relax and be still, filled with stability and having prosperity, you will be living a life of right livelihood in right relationship to the world.
However if this chakra is unhealthy then this may manifest in eating dis-orders and weight problems, inability to connect with life or with those you love on a physical level, overwhelming sense of worry and feeling fearful in life, anxiety and restlessness, dis-organisation and hoarding, lethargy and a general tiredness.
Of course not all of these will apply to you for there are energy crossovers to other chakras but these will give you a general indication of the health of your Root/Base Chakra.
The Root/Base Chakra is associated with the gonads, our sexual reproductive organs (the gonads in males are the testes and the gonads in females are the ovaries) and a part of the endocrine system that regulates our hormones in the body. This chakra is physically located at the base of the spine.
Symbolism and What It Means
There are many associations, symbols and crystals that work to both heal and balance the Root/Base Chakra although some of these will also work with the other chakras. The following chart will give you some idea of these though it is always wise to work with your own symbolism and associations after meditating and healing your Root/Base Chakra.
|Crystals||Ruby||Balancing, Energising, Leadership|
|Garnet||Brings serenity, Enhances sexuality|
|Smokey Quartz||Removes fear, Calming, Positive thinking|
|Hematite||Removes self-limitation, Boosts self-esteem|
|Jasper||Grounding, Aids in dream recall|
|Obsidian||Transforms negative energies|

|Cedarwood||Relieves anxiety, Calming|

So, for example, if you are feeling depressed, fearful or lethargic you might choose to wear red clothing to stimulate the fire in your spirit, to give you more energy and vitality or to strengthen you etc…
If you find yourself trapped in an argument or negative situation then you may choose to wear/carry an obsidian crystal to transform those energies into the positive… If you have come home from a hard day at work and need to relax then putting some sandalwood or patchouli in an oil burner will begin to relax and calm your nerves.
So you can see how we can use these associations, symbols and crystals to our advantage when healing this chakra.
Another ways to heal this chakra is through affirmations like…
- “It is safe for me to be here”
- The earth supports me and meets my needs”
- “I love my body and trust its wisdom”
- “I am immersed in abundance”
For these affirmations to work they must be repeated regularly and you must know that these are truth, strengthening you in your daily life.
Spiritually, it gives us protection of individual integrity and it provides a solid ground from which to establish our equilibrium in order to ascend to higher awareness.
